The 2025 Met Gala, held on May 5, 2025, took place at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art and marked the opening of the Costume Institute’s exhibition titled “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style”, which explores the history and cultural significance of Black dandyism from the 18th Century to today.
The theme celebrated Black men’s sartorial traditions and identity throughout the Atlantic diaspora.
The dress code was “Tailored for You” – an invitation to interpret Black dandyism through personalized, tailored ensembles that challenge gender norms and embrace theatricality.
The event featured an influential and diverse host committee, including voices from fashion, music, sports, and culture. Notables include:
André 3000, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Jordan Casteel, Dapper Dan, Doechii, Ayo Edebiri, Edward Enninful, Jeremy O. Harris, Branden Jacobs‑Jenkins, Rashid Johnson, Spike Lee, Tonya Lewis Lee, Audra McDonald, Janelle Monáe, Jeremy Pope, Angel Reese, Sha’Carri Richardson, Tyla, Usher and Kara Walker.
The gala raised a record-breaking $31 million, surpassing all previous totals in its 77 year history. Guests were the first to preview the new Costume Institute exhibition, which runs until October 26, 2025.
The “Tailored for You” code led to standout red carpet moments blending classic tailoring with bold, avant-garde flourishes. Stars like Zendaya, Kim Kardashian, Anne Hathaway, Jeremy Pope, and Aurora James embodied the theme in striking, sculptural suits and gowns.
LGBTQ+ representation was also prominent with icons like Janelle Monáe, Doechii, Sha’Carri Richardson and Jeremy Pope bringing visibility to the intersection of Black and queer identity.
The theme’s focus on menswear, the first since 2003, was a bold departure from prior, more female-centric exhibitions.
The 2025 Met Gala marked a seminal moment – not just in fashion, but in cultural representation – highlighting the rich legacy of Black dandyism while pushing the boundaries of elegance, creativity, and inclusion.
